Aug 12, 2022: The #FWQ23 Tour Commenced With the El Colorado FWQ 2* in Chile
What a tremendous show! The first competition of the global 2023 Freeride World Qualifier Tour (FWQ) was hosted at El Colorado ski center in Chile this week. The top placing South American winners of each discipline in the Freeride Sudamerica Tour will earn a spot to compete at the Region 2 FWQ Finals in the USA and Canada for an opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Freeride World Tour (FWT).
The biggest Freeride competition in recent years in South America was held on a venue dubbed Chanchito. With excellent snow conditions, great visibility and sunshine, athletes from all over the world ranging from Freeride competition first-timers to FWT alums enjoyed showcasing their skills on Chilean snow.
The El Colorado FWQ 2* competition was the inaugural FWQ event for our upcoming 2023 season. A total of 73 athletes from all over the world came together to compete in one of the most international gatherings in the history of South American Freeride. In addition to athletes from Chile and Argentina, the roster included travelers from Germany, Italy, France, Canada, and the United States.
The stakes were raised thanks to the participation of 21-year-old Spanish skier, Abel Moga and the renowned French snowboarder/skier, Gabriel Bletton. Both elite athletes appear on the Freeride World Tour roster. Bletton placed 1st in Snowboard Men for the 2022 Region 1 season, but he competed in the Ski Men category down here in Chile and clinched a win with a big backflip followed by a technical line choice with many airs.
Moga is traveling through Chile and Argentina with his compatriot Pol Tellosa and the two eagerly decided to register for the El Colorado FWQ when they heard about the Freeride Sudamerica tour dates. “I was surprised by the level of the competition, both from the athletes and from the organization. Everything turned out amazing,” gushed Moga.
"For years we have been working to meet the goal of creating a South American Freeride circuit fully integrated into the Freeride World Qualifier Tour. We’ve worked hard to bring an FWQ event to El Colorado, where the best Freeriding conditions can be found," said Fernando Ochagavía. Ochagavía is a an event organizer, a member of the International Freeskiers & Snowboarders Association (IFSA) Board of Directors and the founder and manager of Freeride Sudamerica.
As members of the IFSA Board of Directors, Fernando and his colleague Gonzalo Lopatin are helping to better align Freeride in South America with the global FWQ tour, rules and judging standards. To provide support, IFSA representatives from the USA, Taylor Merritt and Brennan Metzler, are currently in Chile working to support the Freeride Sudamerica circuit.
“We are proud to be in Chile and Argentina working with Freeride Sudamcerica to finally unite the Americas and make it a wider and more cohesive Freeride region. Many Canadian and American athletes will start traveling to compete in South America to get a head start on their competitive season and earn points for their athlete rankings,” says IFSA Board Member Brennan Metzler.
New for the 2023 FWQ season, at the completion of the Freeride Sudamerica tour, the top placing South American winners in each discipline will each earn entry into the FWQ Finals Series. The three FWQ Final events will take place in March and April in the USA and Canada, where Region 2’s top ranked riders all vie for qualification to the 2024 Freeride World Tour.
“It's a giant achievement for Region 2, that our best South American athletes have this opportunity to earn a place in the FWQ Finals Series. This makes qualification to the FWT far more attainable to talented South American Freeriders. In partnership with IFSA and FWT, South American athletes finally have a path to the global Freeride stage,” says Gonzalo Lopatin. Lopatin is also a Freeride Sudamerica Manager and IFSA Board Member.
The judges were the Chileans Sebastían “Tuto” Oyarzun and Eduardo “Oso” Herreros alongside Argentine Head Judge, Gonzalo Lopatin. In turn, the experienced judge, trainer and technical director, Brennan Metzler of the IFSA, worked alongside the judge crew to supervise the scores and comply with Freeride’s rigorous international standards.

EL COLORADO MASTER’S RESULTS (Age 40+)
The next stop of the Freeride Sudamerica Tour arrives on Saturday, August 13th at La Parva in Chile with an FWQ 2* event. The tour will continue on into Argentina with Cerro Bayo on September 10th and 11th and Cerro Catedral on September 17th and 18th. Cerro Catedral’s results will determine which South American athletes will qualify for the FWQ Finals in 2023 in the USA and Canada.
The day prior to the FWQ 2* at El Colorado, a Junior 2* Regional was held on the Chanchito venue. Aug 14, 2022: Comenzó en Chile la Remporada 2023 del Circuito Internacional Freeride World Qualifier
Con un tremendo espectáculo, este lunes 8 y martes 9 de agosto, se realizó en el centro de ski El Colorado, Chile, la primera competencia del calendario mundial 2023 del Freeride World Qualifier que dará lugares al campeonato mundial de la disciplina, Freeride World Tour.
En el sector llamado “Chanchito” se llevó a cabo la competencia de Freeride más importante en los últimos años en Sudamérica ya que contó con excelentes condiciones de nieve, atletas de todo el mundo y del más alto nivel y un día de sol que permitió a los espectadores disfrutar de un show poco usual en nuestro continente.
Se trató del primer Freeride World Qualifier de la temporada 2023 con un total de 73 atletas de todas partes del mundo como Alemania, Italia, Francia, España, Canadá, Estados Unidos, Chile y Argentina convirtiéndose en una de las competencias más plurinacional en nuestro continente. La gran novedad del día fue la participación del esquiador español Abel Moga y del snowboarder/esquiador francés Gabriel Bletton. Ambos son parte del campeonato mundial “Freeride World Tour”. El francés corre el FWT en snowboard, pero también realiza ski y lo hace tan bien que ganó la competencia en El Colorado con un backflip, seguido de una línea muy técnica con aires trucos.
El atleta español se encuentra realizando un viaje de esquí por Chile y Argentina con su compatriota Pol Tellosa y ambos no dudaron en participar en la fecha realizada en El Colorado. “me sorprendió el nivel que tuvo la competencia, tanto de los atletas como de la organización. Todo salió increíble”, dijo Abel Moga.
“Hace años estamos trabajando para poder cumplir el objetivo de realizar un circuito sudamericano de Freeride totalmente integrado al Freeride World Qualifier, sobre todo poder competir en El Colorado, donde existen las mejores condiciones para hacer esta disciplina”, dijo Fernando Ochagavía, organizador del evento y quien es director de la International Freeskiers Association (IFSA) y fundador y manager de Freeride Sudamérica.
Fernando y su colega Trasandino Gonzalo Lopatin son miembros del directorio de la IFSA, por lo que Sudamérica tiene, por primera vez en la historia, representación y voto a nivel mundial. Es por este acuerdo que Taylor Merrit y Brennan Metzler, de Estados Unidos, se encuentran en Chile trabajando en conjunto para sacar adelante esta serie de eventos clasificatorios al tour mundial. “Estamos orgullosos de estar en Chile y Argentina trabajando con Freeride Sudamérica para finalmente unir las Américas y que sea una gran región de Freeride, muchos atletas canadienses y estado unidenses empezarán a venir a competir aquí ya que es el mismo ranking de puntos”, declaró el director de la IFSA Brennan Metzler.
Cabe destacar que los ganadores del tour Sudamericano en cada categoría tendrán un lugar en las tres finales FWQ clasificatorias al mundial de freeride. “Es una conquista gigante para nuestra región, que nuestros mejores atletas vayan directo a las finales significa que el campeonato mundial FWT ya no queda tan lejos para los sudamericanos. A través de este convenio con la IFSA tenemos representación en el directorio, por lo que Sudamerica ya no será una región relegada sino parte activa en la toma de decisiones del Freeride mundial”, dijo el manager de Freeride Sudamerica y director de la IFSA, Gonzalo Lopatin.
El podio más internacional de todos fue el de la categoría Ski Hombres, donde el francés Gabriel Bletton dominó con claridad seguido por el Argentino Santiago Guzmán, quien realizó una línea única, con trucos y un estilazo, mientras que el tercer puesto lo tomó el español Pol Tellosa con una bajada super agresiva saltando el aire más grande de todo el evento. El podio lo completó el Argentino Ignacio Bertona en cuarto lugar y el Chileno Jens Meier en quinto.

Los jueces fueron los chilenos Sebastían “Tuto” Oyarzun y Eduardo “Oso” Herreros junto al Head Judge Argentino Gonzalo Lopatin. A su vez el experimentado juez, entrenador y director de carrera Brennan Metzler trabajó a la par de ellos para supervisar los puntajes y cumplir con los rigurosos standares internacionales.

La siguiente fecha de este campeonato sudamericano se llevará a cabo en La Parva este sábado 13 de agosto para luego seguir en Argentina los fines de semana del 10 y 11 de septiembre en Cerro Bayo y 17 y 18 del mismo mes en Cerro Catedral, donde se definirá el ranking sudamericano que le dará la posibilidad al mejor atleta por categoría de clasificar a las finales FWQ que se realizan en Estados Unidos y Canadá y que dan cupos para el campeonato mundial de Freeride (FWT).
CAMPEONATO JUNIOR
El Día previo se realizo la fecha junior del circuito Sudamericano. En esta tuvo a 40 atletas, muchos de ellos internacionales, deslizándose por un sector más reducido de “Chanchito”, el sector de competencia que tiene el centro de ski El Colorado.
El Freeride Sudamericano tiene un gran futuro.
