South American FWQ Tour Update

A storm pounds Corralco, setting up primo Andes FWQ finale. Massive snowfall delays the final South American FWQ Tour stop, but new venue options a possiblity!

This year the Freeride World Qualifying season in the Andes has seen a bit of everything, from technical and firm snow conditions under sun at La Parva to challenging and difficult weather at Chapelco to deep powder at Antillanca. Mother Nature saved her biggest storm for the last South American event of the 2019 FWQ season at Corralco, where four days of wind and intense snowfall forced the postponement of the FWQ 2* competition scheduled for September 28. Zero visibility and high avalanche danger made it impossible to pull off the comp.

While the decision to postpone the event and reschedule the competition to October 13-15 was unfortunate but necessary, the sliver lining is that conditions at Corralco in the wake of the storm are some of the best of the South American winter. A deep base and all of the ski area’s venues primed for action and a high octane FWQ finale.

“We always hate to cancel or postpone an event,” says Freeride Chile’s Fernando Ochagavia. “But given how powerful this storm was and the situation, it was the only possible outcome. But now we’re really happy with how things look on the mountain and the recent snowfall will allow us to consider some new venues. It is going to be really exciting for the athletes to tap into some of this new terrain.”

With a deep spring base and potential new venues on tap, Corralco in October proves Mother Nature can be kind indeed, despite the inconvenience.
